What is a Gym Induction? Beginner’s Guide
Updated March 2025
The majority of commercial gyms insert a clause in your membership contract which will require you to undertake an induction before using the equipment freely – this is for insurance purposes as well as giving you basic information on how to operate some of the machines and equipment. Some people who are new to the world of fitness or simply haven’t completed an induction yet may wonder what is involved in a gym induction and what to expect in their short session.
In this beginner-specific guide, we tell you what a gym induction is, why they’re important to undertake, how long you should expect the induction to last as well as other FAQs regarding gym inductions.

What is a gym induction?
Those who are new to going to the gym often have the fear or apprehension of making a ‘show’ of themselves, but we’re here to reassure you that isn’t the case. Every gym user in your new fitness facility has likely gone through the same feelings as you and undertaken an induction at some point
So, what exactly is a gym induction?
There’s more detail to a fitness induction (we’ll cover this further down), but essentially, a typical gym induction is where a qualified fitness instructor will greet you, but normally a certified personal trainer and they will go through a variety of health and safety procedures, a tour of the training equipment, a pre-exercise questionnaire along with other questions you may have. Gym inductions normally take up to 45 minutes.
What happens at a gym induction?
We’ve covered the definition of a gym induction, but we understand you’ll want to be fully prepared to head to the gym for the first time. Here’s a breakdown of what you might do at a gym induction:
- Meet and greet
- Health and safety procedure
- Pre-exercise questionnaire
- Machine and equipment tour
- Gym etiquette
- Any questions you may have
1. Meet and greet
As part of joining a new gym or performance facility, you will be greeted by a fitness professional who will welcome you on your new fitness venture and make you feel familiar with your new surroundings! This is typically a ‘hello’, ‘would you like a drink’ and the other normal greeting gestures.
2. Health and safety procedure
As per legal requirements, your inductor will need to make you aware of several health and safety points, such as where the fire exits are and whom to contact if you need first aid.
3. Pre-exercise questionnaire
Another legal requirement that gyms and personal trainers have to abide by, is that they need to ensure all members have completed a pre-exercise questionnaire before starting any form of exercise on their premises – this is essentially a disclaimer form.
4. Machine and equipment tour
The most daunting part of your gym induction is knowing how to use cardiovascular and resistance equipment. This is where a qualified fitness instructor or personal trainer will help you understand the fundamental movements of certain machines, equipment and free weights so that when you go on your own, you know how to use the pieces of equipment safely and effectively.
5. Gym etiquette
Another aspect of what happens at a gym induction is the covering of gym etiquette. Gym etiquette is essentially a list of how you should behave towards other gym members, staff and equipment during your time in the gym.
10 tips to prepare for your induction:
- Confirm the Induction Time & Location – Ensure you know when and where the session is taking place.
- Check the Gym’s Requirements – Some gyms require you to bring ID, sign forms, or complete a health questionnaire before attending.
- Pack a Water Bottle – Staying hydrated is essential during your session.
- Bring a Small Towel – Some gyms require you to wipe down equipment after use.
- Prepare a Lock – If the gym has lockers, check if you need to bring your own padlock.
- Check Gym Etiquette Rules – Every gym has rules on things like wiping down equipment, using chalk, and re-racking weights.
- Assess Your Fitness Level – Be honest about your experience and fitness level so the instructor can tailor advice accordingly.
- Make a List of Questions – If you’re unsure about anything (e.g., how to use certain machines), jot down your questions.
- Listen & Ask Questions – Pay attention to instructions and ask about any exercises or equipment you’re unsure about.
- Try Out the Equipment – The induction is your chance to test different machines with guidance, so make sure you are comfortable with how to use the equipment properly.
What to wear to a gym induction
This is a common question our team come across and we would suggest you arrive in or bring sports clothing with you. Whilst you can complete a gym induction in all types of clothing, you’ll feel most comfortable in gym clothing!
How long do gym inductions take?
On average, gym inductions can last up to 45 minutes but depending on your level or if the instructor feels confident that you know your way around the equipment and gym, it can be much shorter.
